As a person of a refugee background, Susan is especially passionate about creating change on the issues that affect the daily lives of people seeking asylum. Her personal experience has informed her community organising work at Oaktree and at ASRC, where she has worked to build a diverse movement and ensure that there is platform for people with lived experience to advocate for themselves. She has also worked extensively with young people, aiming to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to become leaders in the spaces where they want to create change.
Freedom Network is a collective of people who are currently seeking asylum based in Melbourne. The majority of our members have arrived by boat some years ago and have been waiting to apply for protection until recently. A smaller number of us have arrived by plane. The Network’s aim is to raise community awareness of the issues facing people seeking asylum and work with other groups from refugee backgrounds to ensure advocacy on refugee rights includes our voices. Restoring our right to permanent protection is a key focus of the Network.
