Waverley Council

Waverley Council has been a signatory for the Refugee Welcome Zone with the Refugee Council of Australia since 2002.

As a member, the Council is committed to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding the human rights of refugees, demonstrating compassion for refugees, and enhancing cultural and religious diversity in the community.

Waverley Council hosts multiple initiatives to ensure the welcoming of refugees into the area, these initiatives include:  

1. Launching Council’s Cultural Diversity Strategy (Oct 2021) 
2. Planning and consultation activities with our Multicultural Advisory Committee 
3. ‘Welcome Bondi’ initiative in partnership with Settlement Services International (SSI), hosting new refugee arrivals from Afghanistan. This included a warm welcoming address by Council’s GM over a picnic lunch, a surf safety talk with Bondi life savers, and children’s play activities / meet & greet with the local Uniting Early Learning Centre. 
4. Launching our local Racism not welcome campaign strategy, United to End Racism, to: 

• •  raise awareness about all forms of racism and its impact
  •  create opportunities for meaningful conversations
  • empower everyone to take simple steps to help end racism.
