Refugee Week, Australia’s premier celebration recognising the contributions of refugees, returns from 14 to 20 June. This year marks a major milestone: the 40th anniversary of Refugee Week in Australia, with the theme A Million Stories.
What started as a local initiative here in Australia has grown into an international movement, with celebrations now taking place in more than 20 countries.
This year’s theme recognises the milestone of Australia having issued one million humanitarian visas since the formal humanitarian program began in 1947. It reflects on how a single story of survival can shape generations to come. At its core, the theme celebrates the collective impact of refugees and the communities that welcome them. It highlights the diverse cultures and experiences that continue to strengthen Australian society and foster connection.
This year also marks the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, which Australia was one of the first countries to sign. To mark these milestones, Australia Post has partnered with the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to release an official commemorative stamp, which will be available to purchase from 16 June 2026 online and at participating Post Offices.
Co-CEO of RCOA Adama Kamara said Refugee Week is an opportunity to recognise the lasting contributions refugees make to communities across Australia.
“The milestone of welcoming one million refugees is a shared national success. Their contributions have formed the backbone of our modern multicultural society. When we lead with welcome, we create the safety and belonging necessary for people to rebuild their lives and build a better Australia for everyone.”
Communities across Australia will host local festivals, panel discussions, art exhibitions, cultural performances, film screenings and so much more. The events are registered on the national Refugee Week calendar.
RCOA’s 41 Refugee Ambassadors – all individuals with lived experience of forced displacement – will be speaking at schools, workplaces and community events throughout the week, sharing their personal stories and experiences of rebuilding their lives in Australia.
For 40 years, Refugee Week has been breaking down barriers and connecting people through shared human experiences.
At a time when global displacement is at record levels, Refugee Week serves as an important reminder of the role communities play in creating places of safety, belonging, and opportunity.
