Fr Michael Smith SJ is a Jesuit priest. For the past 17 years he has been the Head of College and Academic Dean of Jesuit College of Spirituality, which is one of the eleven colleges of the University of Divinity.
At the end of February 2017 he will take up a new role as the International Education Coordinator for Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Rome. JRS currently has 140,000 pupils in its primary and secondary schools in refugee camps in South East Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Central America, and has funding to increase the number to 240,000 by 2020.
He will also oversee the JRS higher education program, which he is passionate about having helped to initiate the first program of online tertiary education for refugees on the Thai-Burma border through Australian Catholic University in 2003.
