A bridge to a new culture: Promoting the participation of refugees in sporting activities

Contents

Sport can be an important bridge to Australian culture, enabling the development of friendships with Australians and the sharing of their own backgrounds. Many local strategies have been developed to assist recently arrived refugees to participate in sporting programs.

This report examines refugee participation in sport. It looks at the benefits of sport and the barriers to participation faced by refugees. It makes recommendations for sporting bodies to promote refugee participation in sport, based on the innovative approaches taken by some organisations. The project was funded by NSW Sport and Recreation.
