Last week, RCOA submitted our response to the Australian Government discussion paper on Australia’s Humanitarian Program 2026-27 and beyond.
The information provided and questions asked in the discussion paper signal the potential for either a reduction in the Humanitarian Program or a shift in the composition away from Government-sponsored places.
In our submission, we strongly reject any cuts to Australia’s Humanitarian Program and any shift away from prioritising referrals from UNHCR within the overall program.
Our submission also includes an explanation of the significant and critical role Australia’s Humanitarian Program plays in a national and international context; our suggestions for a principled approach to resettlement; shining a light on the erosion of protection pathways; and, crucially, breaking the link between onshore and offshore refugee needs.
