Refugee Education SIG Wrap Up No. 2 2018

Key issues raised

Changes in the SRSS will affect income support for full-time students

  • The Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) is an income support program for people who are seeking asylum and waiting for an outcome on their visa application
  • Recent changes to SRSS mean if an adult studies full time, when they are able to work, they are not eligible for SRSS income support
    • Those studying full-time, including under scholarships, will lose their SRSS income support if they are assessed as ‘job-ready’
  • The Refugee Council of Australia and Aslyum Seeker Resource Centre discussed changes to SRSS payment on ABC News Breakfast (further information can be found here)
  • ACTION: Call for organisations to endorse a letter on the upcoming changes to SRSS, asking education providers to support students affected by these changes
