Report on Australian advocacy in Geneva 2018

Years of advocacy by the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) for greater refugee community representation in international policy discussions culminated in the ground-breaking first-ever Global Summit of Refugees in Geneva. The Summit was the highlight of 10 days of Australian advocacy in Geneva (19-29 June 2018), which included UNHCR’s annual NGO Consultations, global dialogue on refugee resettlement, engagement with the UN Human Rights Council and meetings with senior officials of UNHCR and IOM.

2018 John Gibson Refugee Community Leadership Grant recipients

Every year, RCOA sponsors leaders in refugee communities to attend annual consultations in Geneva between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and NGOs. This year, RCOA is proud to support Simon Sang Hre and Bernice Kamikazi who have been selected as recipients for the John Gibson Refugee Community Leadership Grant.

Call for submissions: Want to raise concerns with UNHCR about issues facing your community overseas?

The Refugee Council of Australia is working together with other Australian NGOs, refugee advocates and academics to advocate at an international level with and on behalf of refugees in Australia and the region. Each year, representatives from RCOA and other Australian NGOs travel to Geneva to participate in annual consultations between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and NGOs from around the world.

Supporting refugee community advocacy on an international stage

RCOA is committed to strengthening the link between refugee advocates and international decision-makers. Since 2007, RCOA has been providing support through the annual John Gibson Refugee Community Leadership Grant and other means for advocates from refugee backgrounds to participate in international dialogue on refugee protection.

John Gibson Refugee Community Leadership Grant 2018

The annual John Gibson Refugee Community Leadership Grant supports advocates from refugee backgrounds to take part in high-level international advocacy on refugee issues. One advocate is selected each year to join the Australian NGO team at the annual consultations between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and NGOs in Geneva, Switzerland.
