Australia must continue to stand with Ukrainians seeking safety

24 Feb 2026

Today marks four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Millions of lives have been turned upside down. Nearly six million people have fled Ukraine and are now living as refugees around the world. Inside Ukraine, almost 13 million people still need humanitarian assistance as the war continues.

Since 24 February 2022, the Australian Government has granted nearly 15,000 temporary visas to Ukrainians, with more than 34,000 people arriving in Australia since the war began. In response to ongoing need, the Government opened access to a temporary humanitarian stay arrangement for Ukrainians who arrived before August 2024, offering three-year visas.

Importantly, Ukrainians who arrived in 2022 have now been able to transition to permanent visas. However, many others remain on temporary visas, even as the war continues with no clear end in sight.

Last year, Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) welcomed the Government’s decision to extend permanent visas to Ukrainians who were originally granted only temporary protection. That decision has already made a meaningful difference.

Permanent status provides stability and certainty. It allows children to continue their education without disruption, skilled workers to build their careers, and families to plan for the future without fear of sudden separation.

Ukrainians, like many others forced from their homes by war and persecution, are already contributing to Australian life. They enrich our communities through the arts, sport, food, business, education, healthcare, and community leadership.

Today is a moment to reflect. Australia stepped forward when it mattered. Continuing to support Ukrainians, and all people seeking safety from conflict and persecution, reflects the values we share: fairness, compassion and a commitment to giving people the chance to rebuild their lives in peace.
