What is the Detention Research Project?

The Refugee Council of Australia began its Detention Research Project in late 2015.

The project aims to identify systemic issues of concern relating to detention in Australia.

It will research emerging trends and patterns in Australian immigration detention facilities.  This information will be used to help us advocate on issues relating to detention.

As part of the Project, we are in contact with people in detention, legal representatives, community advocates, detention visitors and non-government organisations.  We also use information we get from our regular networks and interagency groups

We are looking at the following issues in particular:

  • Long term detention (+ 2 years)
  • Visa cancellations
  • Experiences of visitors to immigration detention facilities
  • Use of restraints in detention
  • Transfers
  • General conditions of detention (for example, health care and security)

Please contact us on detention@refugeecouncil.org.au or call us on (02) 9211 9333 if you have information that you think would help us.
