RCOA has developed a range of resources to assist you in preparing for Refugee Week. If you can't find what you’re looking for, contact Lucy Morgan (info@refugeecouncil.org.au) or call (02) 9211 9333 and we will do our best to help you.

Don’t forget to register your event!

Posters

The 2011 Refugee Week poster has been designed by Shaun Tan. Shaun is a Melbourne-based freelance artist and author best known for his award-winning picture books such as The Rabbits, The Lost Thing, The Arrival and Tales from Outer Suburbia. In 2011, Shaun won the Academy Award for Best Short Animated Film for The Lost Thing (adapted from his picture book of the same title) and the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

Shaun has created a beautiful poster which will soon be available from pick-up points across Australia (keep checking this site for further details). A PDF version of the poster can be downloaded here.

Resource Kit

The Resource Kit, which has been broken up into several chapters, has been designed to help event organisers and teachers prepare for Refugee Week. A brief explanation of each section and a direct link to download it is provided.

1. Background information on refugees: a brief introduction to refugees and refugee issues including definitions, basic facts and figures and a rundown of Australia's refugee program.

2. What is Refugee Week?: background information about the event.

3. Planning an event for Refugee Week: a detailed guide on event planning, including event ideas, tips for getting media coverage of your event, guidelines for working with people from refugee backgrounds, advice on evaluating the success of your event and key contacts.

4. Myths and facts about refugees and asylum seekers: this chapter highlights some of the common myths about refugees and asylum seekers and aims to correct the record for people seeking accurate information about issues relating to refugees and asylum seekers.

5. Teacher resources: lesson plans, links to interesting websites with games and information specifically designed for kids, and ideas on how you can bring Refugee Week to your school.

6. Useful websites and refugee-related resources: links to key websites with refugee information packs as well as an extensive list of books, documentaries, films and online games focusing on refugee-related issues.

Refugee Week logo

In sharing ideas and strategies, the UK Refugee Week Consortium has given permission for its Refugee Week logo to be used in Australia. The many colours in the logo speak of the diversity and energy brought to the welcoming country by refugees from many backgrounds. The logo is available for use by any organisation holding events in conjunction with Refugee Week which are in keeping with the Refugee Week objectives of:

  • promoting understanding of refugees and asylum seekers; and
  • celebrating the contributions and achievements of people who have experienced life as a refugee.

Each organisation using the Refugee Week logo is required to inform the Refugee Council of Australia of the event, for inclusion in the national Refugee Week calendar. Events can be registered by sending an email, outlining the event details, to info@refugeecouncil.org.au

The Refugee Week logo can be downloaded from the links below:
