Our Traditional Culture: Refugee Week Exhibition
The Traditional Culture exhibition, organized by the MRC in partnership with the Moonah Arts Centre and Reclink and funded under the Community Capacity Building Grants Program 2009-10, aims to retain and promote provision of traditional cultural skills and knowledge to younger community members and the wider community. The exhibition will present traditional objects and practices produced by people from a refugee and migrant background living in Tasmania. Some of the objects exhibited are the result of several workshop sessions carried out at MRC. Documentation of the workshops will be presented in the exhibition.
Objects and practices exhibited include traditional tailoring, embroidery, basket weaving, traditional instruments and music and dance performances.
The exhibition will be launched by the Hon. Cassy O’Connor MP. A traditional Sudanese music group has been invited to perform at the opening.

School visits from Centacare and Colony 47
Centacare and Colony 47 staff and new entrants are working collaboratively to increase the awareness of primary school children by visiting 4 local schools during Refugee Week. Sharing with young primary school aged students what it is like to be “new” in Australia. The children participated in activities locating on a world map countries where refugees come from.

Wednesday 23 June - Glenorchy
Centacare is holding an information stall at North Gate Shopping Centre to promote Refugee Week to the general public by answering questions about our new arrivals and handing out brochures from various settlement services. “Jumpalong” the embroidered kangaroo made by the new entrant women on the Stitch Life Skills Program at Centacare was set up as a display at North Gate for the day.

Community Lunch
Celebrating together as a community with a free bbq lunch and traditional food, guest speakers from Bhutan and Burma. Activities may include children’s games, dancing & crafts. Free bus pick up to and from venue.

Graduation Ceremony
Centacare will be hosting a graduation ceremony for new entrants exiting the Humanitarian Settlements Service followed by morning tea. There will be tree plantings to mark the occasion and a coffee making ceremony. Minister Cassy O’Connor will be officiating.

Commemoration of Independence of D. R. C (Congo)
Independent from Belgian oppression since June 30, 1960; the Democratic Republic of Congo, a free country located at the heart of Africa, annually commemorate this great sign of autonomy and national freedom. Congolese all over the globe, wherever they are, organize different events to show case their cultural diversity, celebrate and remember the sons and daughters of this great Nation of Africa. The event will include a prayer session followed by a free barbecue.

Power Hip Hop
Ten young, talented and culturally diverse hip hop artists have been mentored by Tasmania's best musicians to create new works for the Symphony Orchestra. Power Hip Hop debuted at the Peacock Theatre in December 2009 and received rave reviews from the TSO audience and hip hop fans alike. Many of these mentored artists are refugees or at-risk youth who have lived through war, poverty and very difficult circumstances. Their art provides them with the opportunity to tell their stories and voice their concerns about the world they live in. This concert is a triumph of creativity and collaboration between one of the world's best orchestras and Tasmania's leading youth Community Cultural Development company. The concerts are aimed at both the general public and school groups, with an educational package being provided to all school groups who attend the concert. Kickstart Arts creates artistically and socially ground breaking art with young people and their communities. Kickstart Arts employs professional artists to work with communities to create a program of exciting projects.
